I was recently flicking through photos on my laptop when I came across over 700 food snaps from Naples last year (2013). I settled down and began an evening on reminiscing,  I started longing to go back, pronto. Any opportunity would take me back to Italy,. However this trip last year was a ‘research’ trip with my foodie friend Julie. Stop laughing, yes it really was a research trip but more than that it was a trip that allowed us to over indulge in everything whenever we wanted when no-one was looking or judging, and we did. I say research trip with a pinch of salt, but you know that, don’t you!!

I wanted to be based In Naples and then travel around the South of Italy. There were two pizzerias I wanted to visit. The first was Di Matteau pizzeria which is located in the heart of Naples down a very busily street. Di Matteau is world renowned for their fried pizza. Delicious and mouth-watering it truly was. Ordered, cooked and presented to me in a matter of minutes, I demolished said pizza in seconds, of course.

Da Michele was the second pizzeria , which was located only a matter of minutes away. The lines of hungry diners outside the front of the pizzeria was astounding. So many people were going to get their pizza before me. Nope, I found my way in ,smiled polity and ordered a large pizza Marinara to take away, which is in my opinion the king of pizzas. Simplicity, is all you need, tomato , oregano and garlic, the true food of love…. So yes, within the space of an hour we had managed to enjoy some of the best pizza’s Naples had to offer. I would go back just for that reason, oh no and the cakes, and the fish, and the coffee……

Julie and I sat outside the pizzeria on the pavement ledge of a local pharmacy with 2 bottle’s of Peroni and a cardboard box balanced on my lap. To eat pizza please follow my instructions:

1. If you are given or have cutlery, then bin it.
2. Grab said pizza , tear it, fold it and EAT it.
3. Enjoy it……… because it’s here in Naples where you find not only the most wonderful people but also the best ice cold peroni and perfect pizza.
